There were two PS4 consoles launched by Sony. One is PS4 Pro which is a more powerful version capable of HDR and 4K gaming and the other one is PS4, popularly known as PS4 Slim. It has same functions but has a slim look as compared to PS4 Pro.
These are some difference between PS4 and PS4 Pro. We will further discuss some terms in detail and also compare which one is the best. You will come across many questions like, how to compare graphics? Or how much powerful does PS4 Pro is? and many more. We will answer these questions in this article.
GPU (graphic processor) in PS4 is twice powerful as compared to PS4. The company also upgraded its processor which controls things like AI (artificial intelligence) and physics of games.
Sony claims that PS4 pro runs at 4.2 teraflops which is far more than original PS4 i.e. 1.84 teraflops. Also, both PS4 and PS4 Pro have same memory capacity that is 8 GB GDDR5. There is extra 1 GB available in PS4 PRO for applications not meant for gaming e.g. Netflix.

Developers uses everything needed for improving gaming experience. Many of them increase resolution of games so that they look more realistic on 4K TV. To improve the quality of lightning and textures, developers also uses strong PS4 Pro GPU.
If you want to compare between two of them then always do comparison with still images. Never see the comparison on YouTube unless until you are watching videos on 4K TV in 4K because it is very difficult to see the difference clearly in videos.
As you can see that there is a difference between the lighting of these two pictures. PS4 Pro gives you more detailed view by adding extra lighting effects and by enhancing contrast. PS4 has simple and flat textures while PS4 Pro shows you sharper image which also helps developers to add more things in games which makes them more interesting.
Does PS4 Pro actually run games at 4K?
Some games can run on 4K resolution while most of the demanding games can’t. This is because at this resolution, it is very difficult for the developers to smoothly render games even with extra power of PS4 Pro. Even the PC which runs games in 4K is much more costly than PS4 Pro itself.
That’s why Sony uses a unique technique to overcome this problem. Many games run in less than 1080p and Xbox One S upscales these games to 4K. Due to this, it becomes very difficult to compare between4K and upscale visuals.
But Xbox can’t match the performance of PS4 Pro running same game. This is because the more you get closer to 4K, more up scaling will be visible.
Meaning and working of HDR
High Dynamic Range (HDR) makes games, TV and films look more colorful, appear brighter and look real.
For many years TVs were restricted by standard designs for cinema screens and CRT TVs. Introduction of HDR allows TV to manipulate its full potential. HDR leads to more vibrant colors, more brightness and more realistic pictures. But you can only take these benefits if you have HDR TV.
Is there any need of 4K HDR TV for using PS4 pro?
Well the answer is no. But I recommend you that you should have one. There is a technique known as Supersampling which is responsible for improving graphics on 1080p TV, but at the same time not all games can do this. So I don’t think that upgrading your PS4 is a good idea if you do not have 4K TV.
There will be some new features in PS4 update like boost mode which can enhance performance of many games. Of course it will not be like 4K but there will some improvement. So those who don’t own 4K TV can buy PS4 Pro.
Is PS4 Pro better for PlayStation VR?
Well the answer is no because most of the games run more smoother on PS4 as compared to PS4 Pro in VR. And also this difference will be more significant in the future updates.
So it is clear that PlayStation VR will have compatibility issues with PS4 Pro. There is a new HDMI version used by PlayStation which is incompatible with HDR and 4K. So the users of PS4 Pro have to switch to TV for playing games. Although the developers are working on an upcoming model which can overcome this issue.
When it comes for size comparison, PS4 Pro is smaller than Xbox One.
Comparison of size between PS4 and PS4 Pro:
PRODUCT DIMENTIONS (WxDxH)
- Original PS4 5×30.5×5.3 cm.
- PS4 Slim 5×28.8×3.9 cm.
- PS4 Pro 5×32.7×5.5 cm.
The PS4 slim is 20% larger in volume as compared to PS4 Pro which is 78% larger.
Games in PS4 and PS4 Pro
There is no such type of game which is specially made for PS4 pro or PS4. The company will not allow those games that run only on PS4 pro. The only difference will be that the game will be more enhanced for PS4 Pro.
Now every PS4 game supports PS4Pro mode with better performance and improved graphics.
Watch Dogs 2: Because of improved anti-aliasing, this game looks good in both 1080p and 4K versions.
Battlefield 1: There is more detailed picture which will give you more advantage in multiplayer games. This is also one of the best upgrades of PS4 Pro.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: This game is recently updated by CD Projekt Red. Now this game fully supports 4K and HDR upscaling. It is said that it looks amazing after this update.
Hitman: There is an improvement in textures and performance on PS4 Pro. But there is no HDR support.
The Last of Us Remastered: This game supports 4K at 60fps that looks amazing. Also the best game for HDR.
Resident evil 7: The best game that works great with HDR by adding a creepy feeling while playing the game.
The Last Guardian: This game supports both 1080p and 4K on PS4 pro. However, HDR also works well on existing PS4.
Horizon Zero Dawn: This is the first game that is specially designed for PS4 Pro. It looks great and every PS4 Pro owner must have this.
Rise of the Tomb Rider: This game does not support HDR but its visual improvements in 1080p and 4K makes it look stunning. This is the best example of PS4 Pro upgrade.
Does Ps4 pro play 4K Blue-ray discs?
No, PS4 Pro does not play 4K blue ray discs while Xbox One S support ultra HD blue ray. But at the same time it supports 4k HDR content.
There is no need of upgrade if you have 1080p TV and own PS4
There is no benefit of upgrading your 1080p TV to 4K TV unless until you have PS4 Pro and I don’t think that it is a right decision of spending money on both PS4 Pro and 4KTV. But if you really want an upgrade but don’t have enough money to buy both the things then buy TV first. But in my opinion if you are not able to afford both of them then there is no point of upgrading one thing because this will ruin your gaming experience.
Upgrade to PS4 Pro only if you already have 4K TV
We don’t force you to buy PS4 Pro instantly, but there are some reasons behind that will surely insist you to purchase it. The games will look amazing on 4K TV with PS4 Pro. This is enough to enhance your gaming experience. Also, there are many new games like Horizon: Zero Dawn and many more that will look stunning and more realistic on 4K TV. But remember that only purchase PS4 Pro if you don’t have Ultra HD Blue-Ray Player and if you have a 4K TV lacking HDR support.
Only go for PS4 pro if you don’t have PS4
Of course, PS4 Pro provides you better and faster looking games and a good experience. But only go for PS4 Pro if you can afford it. Otherwise, your old PS4 is also good as it will play your same game but in little bit lower version. But if you can purchase Ps4 Pro then don’t wait, go and get one today because it will surely give you the best gaming experience and you will never regret buying this.
